When it comes to the NIKE AIR TRAINER SC II, it’s clear that Bo Knew, but maybe Nike head office forgot – as it didn’t see the light of day between 1992 and 2011, before Nike dusted it off and treated it to some US-only drops last year.
Here in the UK We got our first sniff of the shoe as part of this year’s Vintage Pack alongside the Revolution and original SC Trainer, but for 2014 there looks to be a wave of SC II’s heading to these shores, led off by the stealthy black, grey and 3m combo.
We’ve always had a soft spot for Nike’s Air Trainer line. Designed for multi-purpose sports and cross training they’ve always been an intriguing mix of panels, straps, aggressive outsoles and air bubbles, with function at the top of the priority list – real Swiss Army knife shoes. Capped off with one of The Swoosh’s most memorable ad campaigns fronted by Football/Baseball legend Bo Jackson, the whole line is certified classic ’90s Nike. The 1990 SC II is probably the peak point of the range, taking the DNA of the original SC then adding in the forefoot stability strap, integral Webtec bands, and a higher cut courtesy of a unique padded ski-boot style insert.
Like we said, 2014 is going to be a big year for the SCII, with various makeups on the way, including some very 90’s looking white and Neon versions. Whilst we’re looking forward to those, we’ve got a slightly stealthier colourway to entertain us in double black and anthracite.
This murdered-out version features a black nubuck upper, with a tonal insert sleeve and dark grey 3M hits on the swoosh and heel panel. The white midsole and light grey outrigger are left to provide a bit of contrast, completing a well-worked colourway. Granted these may look a bit goofy on store shelves, but a quick re-lace using the lower holes really sorts the shape out, and the fully removable strap gives you a further choice of looks – overall it’s a damn versatile shoe that looks like it can take some UK winter punishment.
The NIKE AIR TRAINER SC II in the Black / Grey colourway is AVAILABLE NOW via the link-through below, and will start to drop in other colourways over the coming week too, so be sure to check back, and make sure you’re following us on our social feeds to stay ahead of the drops.
