You may have noticed we’ve got a thing for quality retro runners here at The Drop Date, so you’ll excuse us if we get a little over excited for the long awaited REEBOK LX8500.
This is a shoe that Reebok running fans and collectors have waited a long time for. Originally released in 1985, the LX was proper upper tier running stuff – it went all in on the multi-foam cushioning tech, and building on the success of the 1983 Classic Leather, also used a distinctive soft garment leather upper for the most luxurious fit and finish. These weren’t just the Bentley of ’85 runners, these were on some Mulliner steez. Understandably, this made them expensive and scarce, meaning that for most they became catalogue top-trumps that were rarely spotted in the wild.
Previous retros didn’t do much to quench the thirst of the Reebok faithful, as they ended up a long way from the originals in overall look and feel, with key details changed or removed totally – some even missed the forefoot flex wave.
Thankfully Reebok have pulled out the stops to make up for the previous misses, and the 2013 model looks to all intents and purposes like a pair that’s been carefully stored for the best part of 30 years! That all-important vintage wedge shape is in full effect, the glove leather is soft and supple, and the detailing is just right – the large woven Reebok tags are there, the heel counter is spot on, and the brand split-stripe features an aged cracked effect.
We’ve seen other brands try the ‘vintage’ look over the last couple of years, but Reebok have applied more thought and care to it than most, and the end result is subtle, classy and authentic – not a urine-coloured midsole in sight!
Reebok have been on a high lately but these may just be a new personal best – beautifully executed, true to size and perfect on foot, the REEBOK LX8500 is a slice of 80’s decadence that everyone should add to their rotation and are available now, via the link-through below.
