Nike has plenty of tricks up its Swoosh-branded sleeve for 2017, not least of which is the NIKE AIR SPIRIDON ULTRA.
We’re big Spiridon fans – the shoe’s long-overdue return this year went down very well at TDD HQ – so we’re keen to see this new updated version of the classic 1997 runner in the flesh. Nike has been pretty respectful when it comes to the amendments, keeping the beloved shoe’s character intact while upgrading its construction for the modern day. As the name suggests, the major change is the Ultra sole unit which reduces weight while still following the original’s chunky lines. The mesh upper is still in effect with its lacing stays visible beneath, but for this new version the mudguard wrapping the shoe is fused with the upper for a seamless, streamlined look.
Both upgrades make the new shoe more lightweight, which is fitting since the original Spiridon’s breathable upper was a revolutionary introduction which made the shoe one of the lightest around. The forefoot mini-Swoosh is still here on the Ultra version, picked out in red on an almost fully blacked-out colourway decked out with reflective detailing. The second colourway we’ll be treated to in the coming year is a definite nod to the traditionalists: with its grey upper, metallic red Swoosh and black mudguard, it replicates the famous OG Spiridon colourway with reflective details added for extra impact.
