Best recognised for being the founder of streetwear royalty, Palace, Lev Tanju has an unbelievable career discography under his belt. Appointed for the role of creative director of FILA+ back in January, his creative impact has already spoken volumes for the long-standing brand, injecting a refreshing flair into its ecosystem. With FILA+’s Fall/Winter 2024 drop just around the corner, we’re taking a deep dive into Tanju’s authentic vision for the sportswear grail label.
Tanju, a British-born designer with a deep passion for skateboarding, has seamlessly transitioned from the founder of streetwear powerhouse Palace to the helm of FILA+. As a premium extension of FILA, FILA+ is breathing new life into the brand’s storied archive through a modern lens. Under Tanju’s direction, the label is rolling out dynamic campaigns and collections that pay homage to FILA’s rich heritage while infusing it with a youthful energy.
At the forefront of every decision Tanju makes is the label’s rich Italian roots. With over a century of history to play with, he’s blending FILA’s classic DNA with an urban edge, crafting a distinctive identity for FILA+. Part of his mission as creative director has been to shape what FILA+ calls its ‘aesthetic landscape’, and he’s making significant strides. Tanju has enlisted some of the most forward-thinking photographers to establish a powerful visual narrative, while his designs echo a timeless vintage vibe steeped in Italian culture. The brand’s assets exude a tasteful, unrefined quality, deliberately rough around the edges (in the best way possible), highlighting a deep commitment to authenticity.
A significantly notable moment of Tanju’s time with FILA+ so far can be identified in his collaboration with American photographer Ryan McGinley. Teaming up for a branding campaign shot in Italy’s Tuscany, the outcome was a pivotal example of just what the South London multi-hyphenate is all about. Depicting everyday people rather than professional models, the campaign captures so much more than just FILA+ garments – celebrating nature, human interaction, and the spontaneous beauty of life. The campaign feels raw, unpolished, and light hearted, a testament to Tanju’s creative approach.
With the unveiling of the FW24 campaign, shot by British photographer Kingsley Ifill, Tanju’s commitment to a spontaneous aesthetic is clearer than ever. Crafting a visual ode to FILA’s Italian heritage, this inaugural FILA+ collection oozes nostalgic Italian charm, painting the clothes as lived-in pieces. Effortlessly transforming the tranquil Italian countryside through the fast-paced lens of street photography, Tanju truly captures dynamic juxtaposition.
FILA+ FW24 hits Dover Street Market London on 28TH AUGUST 2024, landing at SELECT RETAILERS the following day. From his inspirations to his aspirations, and his enduring love for FILA, it’s clear that Tanju is just getting started.
