Reigniting the long-standing collaborative spark between the Three-Stripes and Gary Aspden, the alliance presents the adidas SPZL ‘By the Sea’ Collection. Paying homage to an epitome of British culture surrounding the picturesque ‘seaside town’, the capsule honours the partnership’s esteemed heritage in line with their 10th year anniversary.
Before we dive into details of the collaboration, let’s take a moment to go back in time. Starting out in the industry as an avid fan of the German powerhouse, Aspden’s relationship with the brand began in 1999. After putting together an extensive exhibition in 2013, including over 600 pairs of adi offerings, it was clear that the creative multi-hyphenate was a force to be reckoned with.
And thus, the Spezial legacy was born. One entire decade later, and the relationship between the two couldn’t be more fruitful, delivering both footwear and apparel that cultivates a nostalgic yet contemporary essence that stays authentic to adi’s heritage. This leads us perfectly to the present day, where the alliance are doing exactly what they do best – injecting a SPZL edge across three of the brand’s sneaker classics. Spotlighting the Moscrop 2, Samba Deco and Wilsy for this seaside-inspired collection, let’s get into the details.
Starting off with the most earthy of the trio, the Moscrop 2 sneaker boasts a neutral palette of beige, brown and cream tones. Maintaining its conventional construction of pigskin suede and Cordura uppers, the shoe’s construction nods to the archives, taking notes from the retro adidas Raider and Infinity models. Next up, the collection champions the Samba Deco, presenting a colour scheme of rich navy pigskin suede with sleek green leather accents and luxe gold branding. Returning for the first time in a hot second – 2020, to be precise – the Wilsy rounds off the footwear offering, donning a minimal yet effective look. Opting for a predominantly Chalk White exterior, hits of Tribe Green allow a colourful edge whilst seamlessly capturing the timeless vintage aesthetic.
As for the apparel sector, the 7-piece capsule is pulled straight from the SPZL archives. Key items include the Tribe Green Calavadella Jacket, Cardboard brown Track Top and Track Pant, two jersey t-shirts, the Meanwood Polo Shirt, a Cap and Bucket Hat. Blending vintage style with modern elements whilst celebrating Ibiza’s music culture and ’90s nostalgia, this collection is the epitome of what the SPZL lineage is all about.
