New footwear brand DOUBLE N strives to deliver fuss-free footwear without any hype, proving that “winning isn’t everything…”
There’s been a space in the market for a brand that defies the culture of overblown hype for quite some time, and now lifestyle footwear aficionados Neal Heard and Neil Morris have delivered just that. Titled Double N, their brand new venture draws on the pair’s extensive shared knowledge, with Neal being the author of the famed ‘Sneakers’ book from 2003 and Neil having worked on successful brands Wild Bunch and Veras. After much speculation about utilising Wild Bunch’s high-end Spanish factory to create a series of sneakers, the two N’s coined their brand Double N, bestowing it with the solid mantra of “winning isn’t everything.” The founders’ joint distaste for hyper-commercialisation shines through Double N’s introductory trio of silhouettes: the OPHR, RANDLE and PENN.
There’s a story behind each model, with the OPHR first paying homage to Tommie Smith’s Olympic record-breaking 200-metre race in the infamous 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City, which saw Smith himself and John Carlos both raise a fist for Black Power on the podium. Secondly, the Randle gives a nod to the anti-establishment prowess of Jack Nicholson’s character in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Although his plight comes to an unsuccessful end, the guy definitely took a stand. Along with the Penn, each shoe is expertly crafted in sunny Spain using high-spec leather and suede, giving Double N a stripped-back and tasteful edge that is sure to appeal to all you connoisseurs out there. Listen when we say, you’d best keep an eye on this brand…
