For FW24, Clarks Originals heads straight to the heart of Tokyo fashion subculture, paying tribute to the birthplace of modern streetwear, Ura-Harajuku, in their latest collection. Nestled in the backstreets of Shibuya, Ura-Hara is more than just a neighbourhood – it’s the epicentre of a style revolution that gave birth to the iconic Urahara kei movement.
Championed and appreciated for its unique fusion of Western influences and Japanese creativity, this corner of Tokyo is where streetwear as we know it took its first steps. Now, Clarks is stepping in, not just with a collection, but with a deep dive into the origins of street style.
This isn’t just a trip down memory lane! The spotlight shines brightly on the Clarks designs that became synonymous with the Ura-Harajuku scene, starting with the timeless Wallabee. With its glove-like fit and effortless style, the Wallabee became a symbol of laid-back cool, embraced by a generation looking for something that set them apart from the crowd. Brought to life with a micro-croc leather fashioning, this Clarks classic boasts an elevated steez, ideal for taking your ‘fit to new heights.
Then we have the Desert Boot, a sleek staple born in the 1950s, with its smooth-toe silhouette cutting a sharp figure in the urban landscape. Boasting the same streamlined exterior as its Wallabee counterpart, the collection injects a edgy flair that honours Harajuku’s gritty determination. Finally, the Desert Trek, with its unmistakable central seam, added another layer of individuality – a fitting match for a community that prized originality above all else.
September 2024 sees the release of Clarks and Tokyo, a documentary directed by Taichi Kimura that uncovers the rich history of Urahara kei. Through interviews with writers, independent store owners, and longtime Urahara aficionados, the film traces the roots of the culture – and Clarks’ role in its growth. The documentary is a love letter to those who live and breathe the streetwear scene, giving a voice to the pioneers who helped shape it.
