Original Is Best: The ASICS Tiger Gel Mai returns

ASICS revive the ASICS TIGER GEL MAI in its original form, adding to the growing popularity of the ever-eccentric model.

An eye-catching silhouette returns from the ASICS Tiger archives this month, in the form of obscure ‘90s model, the Gel Mai. Following on from its inclusion in Ronnie Fieg’s “Legends Day” Collection last year, and more recently, Slam Jam’s bright reissue – a return to the model’s original colourway is set to generate some hype.

A welcome appearance to shelves, the OG reissue comes with a few subtle updates to its ever-eccentric design. The Gel Mai’s trademark asymmetric lacing system is retained and takes shape down the lateral side of each shoe. A combination of breathable mesh and webbed suede paneling cover the upper and act as lace eye stays, bringing each side of the shoe together once the laces are fastened, ensuring a secure lockdown. One of the only ASICS Tiger running shoes to strip away the brand’s iconic side stripes, branding has been subtly relocated to the rear midsole with a shiny plastic fascia.

The first colour options up for release include the Gel Mai’s original blue and white palette, alongside a darker monochrome edition. With the shoe’s desirability snowballing fast, don’t be surprised if further colourways start creeping into release schedules soon.
