The ADIDAS ORIGINALS INIKI RUNNER is a brand new silhouette from the Three Stripes and one that celebrates the brand’s 1970s heritage.
After digging deep in its archives, adidas adopted elements from its most popular vintage runner designs, blending them with new technology and a modern sensibility. The result is a technologically advanced silhouette that maintains a classic and nostalgic appeal. This old school look is achieved through the construction of the shoe’s upper, which is fashioned from a two-way stretch mesh with vintage suede overlays, a shiny-mesh tongue and printed 3-stripes branding with a serrated effect. Despite the trainer connoisseur’s appreciation for history and heritage, we all expect the benefits of modernity, namely comfort, fit and durability. Accordingly, adidas has included a concealed sock-fit design, OrthoLite sockliner and BOOST midsole unit. There are additional subtle details, such as copper-tipped laces and a gum rubber tooling. There will be two colourways at launch: classic navy and red versions that have contrasting white Boost outsoles, heel tabs and Three Stripes branding.
adidas has been on a tear as of late, really pushing the envelope in terms of style and technology – think Ultra Boost, NMD and Yeezy – but the brand is taking a slightly different tack with the Iniki by combining its most recent innovations with a retro look. It’s a winning combination in The Drop Date’s opinion, and one that’s sure to win over a legion of fans.
