Ask any sneakerlover bout the best New Balance drop ever, and chances are the ‘Protection Pack’ will get a mention. First launched in 2021 and also known as ‘Refined Future’, the pack featured three standout colourways of the 2002R: ‘Rain Cloud’, ‘Phantom Black’, and ‘Sea Salt’ – all with that now-signature torn-up, layered look.

Well, good news if you missed out the first time (guilty!): all three are making a comeback this year.

‘Rain Cloud’

Designed by Yue Wu, the idea behind the pack was simple – create something that looked worn in, not pristine. “It’s not collector’s stuff. It’s just a shoe,” Wu told Complex. The goal? Make shoes that people actually wear, not just admire on a shelf.

And although Wu admits ‘Protection Pack’ isn’t technically the correct name, it’s stuck – and sneaker fans aren’t complaining.

‘Sea Salt’
‘Phantom Black’

Each pair keeps the original vibe: mesh and suede uppers with those rugged, ripped overlays. Underfoot, you’ll get all the comfort of New Balance’s signature NERGY cushioning.

The Drop

The trio drops June 4, 2025 – but only in Europe (for now). Keep an eye on the Drop Date release calendar so you don’t miss it this time around.
