Utilising techniques all the way from Japan, New Balance’s latest endeavour explores unique craftsmanship to deliver the newly-debuted Boro Pack.

The core of the capsule stems from the ‘boro’ design practice, a Japanese technique that’s been adopted since the 1850s. Intended to repair damaged clothing and ensure warmth during the cold seasons, the practice saw layers of fabric scraps sewn together for a patchwork-like result. Of course, the method was not about achieving a rustic, DIY aesthetic – but instead a means of innovation and practicality. ‘Boro’ meant making the most of any accessible cotton and hemp materials; significantly invaluable at the time. Now, the Boston-based retailer pays homage to the pivotal design method, expressed via the New Balance 550 and 580 silhouettes.

Boasting a plethora of contrasting indigo fabrics and textures, the New Balance Boro Pack is every designer’s dream. Each panel eloquently interweaves with the next, creating a beautifully dynamic upper that’s highlighted by white contrast stitching. Materials across both offerings include supple and distressed suede, woven canvas and tonal denim, with the 550 also sneaking in a hit of cracked leather. Rounded off with an off-white midsole, this artistic Pack is almost too good to wear.

The New Balance Boro Pack is anticipated to arrive at some point this month (NOVEMBER ‘23), although the brand is yet to officially confirm.
