Celebrating an impressive 50th anniversary year, the PUMA SUEDE has successfully defied the clock to remain a timeless footwear option.

Released in the ‘60s, the model was quickly championed by New York Knicks player Walter “Clyde” Frazier, and has since transcended its humble roots to become a staple footwear choice across a myriad of movements, including hip hop, b-boy, and sneaker cultures. To celebrate it’s milestone half a century on the shelves, PUMA hosted a celebration in Hoxton, London last night, also doubling up as a pre-launch for the forthcoming PUMA X BOBBITO SUEDE, which continues the footwear brand’s love affair with the multi-faceted industry expert. PUMA also used the venue to showcase some of the previous Suede collaborations, including efforts with Fubu, Michael Lau, Dassler, and Hello Kitty.

Bobbito stole the show later in the evening with a talk lead by DJ Snips, sharing his personal story of growing up wearing the Suede, emphasising how he’s always considered it to be a basketball trainer. The influence that travelling around New York has on his style was also a focal point, with Bobbito revealing how subway train journeys can be a window into consuming new street cultures and trends. The differences between current day sneaker culture and years gone by also progressed into an open discussion around accessibility and knowledge, with roots of the famous “Where’d You Get Those?” phrase revealed as something Bobbito was asked in response to something rare he was wearing back in the day, that wouldn’t have been as easy to obtain pre-Internet. A carefully balanced mix of both sharing insight and celebrating the legacy of PUMA’s leading silhouette, it set the stage perfectly ahead of the Bobbito Garcia launch this weekend.
