The NIKE AIR SAFARI QS could just be one of the most exciting retros of 2018… It’s been a while since we last saw the Safari out in the wild, so the news of this one will no doubt get a lot of ‘heads salivating.
What can you say about one of the most-talked-about shoes of the late ’80s? Although the original Air Safari launched in 1987 as a running shoe, it was often bandied about to be a trail shoe or perhaps a long-lost cousin of similar-looking models in the ACG series, such as the Wildwood or even the Son of Lava Dome. Whatever its function, it came and went quickly, but not before making its mark on footwear design forever. The Air Safari was part of the ‘Air Pack’ of 1987, featuring alongside the Air Max 1, Air Trainer 1, Air Revolution, and Air Sock. The famous Safari print was inspired by a couch in a high-end furniture store in New York City: fashioned in an exotic ostrich skin, Tinker Hatfield thought this represented the absolute pinnacle of luxury and therefore decided to transfer this concept to a running shoe. The rest is history.
